The BizSpark Startup of the Day is Kinvey, a TechStars Boston 2011 Company. Below you will find an interview with Sravish Sridhar, Founder and CEO of Kinvey. All the best to them and congratulations for being the startup of the day!
Tell us who you are and your role in the company:
Founder and CEO of Kinvey.
What did you do before creating your company?
Founding team at United Devices, where I built grid and cloud computing software used by millions of people. Founded a non-profit called We Flap (www.weflap.org), where we use social media to help non-profits in India find supporters on social networks and inbound marketing techniques.
How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?
BizSpark has been great for us. The program has really helped us integrate with Azure, Bing and Windows phone platforms. Being picked as the Startup of the Day is an exciting validation of the partnership and integration we have enabled with Microsoft.
What is your company’s mission?
Be the #1 Cloud Backend for Mobile Apps in the World.
In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:
Kinvey makes it ridiculously easy for developers to build & operate a cloud backend for their mobile apps. We call it Backend as a Service.
How did you get the idea for your company?
We built mobile apps for different ideas, ranging from creating a family information sync app for moms and dads, to apps for non-profits. We found that all our app ideas needed a backend, and building and operating a backend sucks. We decided to solve the backend problem.
Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?
We have raised $2M in a seed round, led by Atlas Venture, and are a TechStars Boston 2011 Company.
How many employees do you have? How many developers?
Kinvey has 7 employees, 4.5 developers (we all wear multiple hats, hence the fractions).
Are you hiring? If yes, what are you hiring for and where?
Yes, we’re hiring engineers for our Core Platform, DevOps and Mobile Development teams. More information at http://www.kinvey.com/index.php/workwithus.
Which platform are you building on? Why?
Kinvey is built by a team in which every person has created and deployed backend software used by millions. We believe that the best platforms scale and live across different platforms. So Kinvey introduces two mobile industry firsts – 1) The Kinvey backend middleware and data layers sit across multiple cloud service providers (at the moment, Rackspace, Amazon EC2 and Microsoft Azure). 2) Apps built on any mobile OS platform can use Kinvey – iOS, Android, Windows, Blackberry, HTML5, etc. – we support them all.
Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?
Mobile applications and how they interact with Cloud, of course.
What do you think about the BizSpark Program?
For a startup, integrating with large enterprise technologies and platforms was hard in the past. The BizSpark program has opened the doors for Kinvey into the internal Microsoft mobile and cloud ecosystem. The access and the perks have been phenomenal!
Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?
Take your idea, build it, put it front of customers and iterate like crazy till you find something your customers can’t live without. And network like crazy – the more help you get, the better.
Who’s your role model?
My uncle – a brilliant entrepreneur and always remembered as a fantastic friend.
What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?
As a mobile developer, focus on your app. Leave your BadasS backend to Kinvey.
