Tell us who you are and your role in the company:

Co-founder and CEO.

What did you do before creating your company?

I worked in the business development and intellectual property portfolio management group with Wright Marketing, Inc. in New York. While employed at the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, MD, I worked with international corporations and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to file 510(k) applications for diagnostic devices for dengue fever. I was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) research fellow while earning a B.S. in Cellular Biology and Molecular Genetics from the University of Maryland, College Park. I am currently finishing my Ph.D. in Genetics at Tufts University, where I was awarded an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA). I focus on infectious diseases, cancer and genetics.

How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

Awesome. Its great to see big companies like Microsoft supporting the entrepreneurial ecosystem in so many ways.

What is your company’s mission?

Relay helps bring better therapies to patients by increasing the efficiency of partnering and licensing within the biopharma industry.

In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:

Relay Technology Management provides a software analytics solution to identifying and evaluating scientific innovation.

How did you get the idea for your company?

As basic science researchers, the founders wanted to see more science translated into commercial applications for patients. There are enormous amounts of scientific and business data that have to be taken into consideration when making a strategic decision in the biopharma industry. Our goal is to improve the process and drive value for our customers.

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

Relay won the Tufts Gordon Institute Classical $50K Business Competition, which was a great experience. We have several clients in academia and biotech, and have completed paid pilot projects with our software platform. We are currently seeking an Angel round of investment to drive sales and enter secondary vertical markets.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

We have a core team of 3, with one software developer who has a Ph.D. background in machine learning.

Are you hiring? If yes, what are you hiring for and where?

We are looking for GUI for our lead product.

Which platform are you building on?Why?

We are using Windows and SQL server. Love the platform and the features.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?

With an increase in global education and access to information via the internet, I think collaborative opportunities between groups and individuals will reach an unprecedented level in the near future. Organizing this information in a meaningful way will enable us to answer questions using worldwide resources.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

BizSpark has been a great resource for us, both internally and externally. I would recommend the BizSpark program to any start-up, whether they are in the software space or not.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

Perseverance is key.

Who’s your role model?

I have a ton of respect and admiration for Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger wanted to be a bodybuilder, and won the Mr. Universe at age 22 and won Mr. Olympia 7 times. He then wanted to become a movie star, and became the biggest action movie star in the world. He then ran for Governor, and was elected the 38th Governor of California. For someone to set their mind on a goal, and achieve those goals like he has is a very motivating thought.
