Interview with Franck Jeannin, Founder and CEO of Ormetis

Tell us who you are and your role in the company:

Founder and CEO.

What did you do before creating your company?

Created video games for UBI Soft, enjoyed being part of the Business Objects success story, founded LinkGuard to rid the web of broken links.

How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

We feel very privileged to be part of such a vibrant ecosystem.

What is your company’s mission?

Empowering business users to deal with their data.

How did you get the idea for your company?

Watching smart people doing far too much Copy/Paste in Excel.

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

Self-funded, close to being profitable. Open to the idea of external funding is there is a good fit and it serves a purpose.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

3 including 2 in R&D.

Are you hiring? If yes, what are you hiring and where?

Growing organically means we are hiring but slowly.

Which platform are you building on? Why?

.NET (WPF and Silverlight). One of the best technology stack around and certainly the one that is progressing the most rapidly.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/internet area?

Everywhere, barriers to entry are low and new niches appear every day. Be yourself, be original. Don’t follow the crowd by reinventing the last next best thing.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

It’s a fantastic counter-part to the open-source model (not completely altruist from Microsoft though). Open-source development tools are free, well, Microsoft ones are free too (if you are a startup). By the time you have to pay for it, you are either bust or successful so it doesn’t matter either way.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

Go for it!

Who’s your role model?

It’s a bit of a cliché but Bill Gates is not a bad one.

What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?

Power is shifting toward the users. Software should be easy to use period. No excuse for clumsy user interfaces.
