App-V 4.5 Resource Kit: Application Virtualization Cache Resizing Tool

As we said yesterday, each day of this week we will have different posts covering the different App-V Resource Kit tools. Today we will talk about the cache resizing tool.

Often companies start exploring application virtualization by publishing a limited number of applications. Gradually, as they realize the value of application virtualization, more applications are virtualized and pushed out to the client machines. This can require that the size of the App-V client cache to be increased beyond its default value or be configured to adjust automatically based on available disk space (a new setting in 4.5).

If given the proper rights, an end user can change the client cache configuration settings using the client management console:

But in enterprise IT environments most customers won’t want the end user to make these changes or ever see the screen above. Additionally, touching every client manually in order to make the change is not feasible. The cache resizing tool enables administrators to automate this task, making it possible to use an electronic software delivery system (like SCCM) to update the App-V cache configuration settings for all machines across the organization before publishing the next big application.

C:\MSAppVirt_CacheSize_Setup_1.0.0.15100>AppVCacheSize.exe

Usage: AppVCacheSize.exe [/f|/s]:size

/f - Set the minimum free disk space threshold to size

/s - Set the maximum cache size to size
