SoftGrid: A few quick notes on Disconnected Operation mode

One of our top Microsoft Application Virtualization engineers by the name of Paul Freitas recently wrote up a couple quick notes on Disconnected Operation (DO) mode and I thought it might be something you all would like to see as well.  This assumes you already know what DO mode is so in case you don't you may want to check out the "Mobile mode" section in Microsoft SoftGrid Application Virtualization: Under the Covers.

If the application has launched at least once, the app should go be able to go into Disconnected Operation (DO) mode assuming none of the the defaults have been changed.  Below are some of the ways DO mode can be configured:

- The length of time DO mode will continue without re-authorization: See the SoftGrid client properties -> connectivity tab: "Limit disconnected operation to." 90 days is the default.

- Whether or not DO is available at all: See the SoftGrid client properties -> connectivity tab: "Allow disconnected operation".  Should be enabled by default.

- You can also disable the authorization check: See the SoftGrid Server console -> right-click default provider properties -> select the "Provider Pipeline tab" -> de-select "Enforce Access Permission Settings".

Note: If the SQL server is down but the VAS is still running, the SoftGrid client should still go into DO mode assuming none of the the defaults have been changed since without the SQL server the VAS cannot respond. Some older versions of SoftGrid had a problem with this, however this problem has been fixed since version 4.1.  The MS SQL Server is required for desktop configuration (shortcuts and file types on desktop), authorization (checking to see if app has been published to user), streaming content (loading the SFT file into the SoftGrid client cache) and collecting usage data (but this will not prevent app launch).  It is not required in order to launch an application
