SharePoint 2013: Maximum Upload Size Changed

Today, one of my customers noticed the Maximum Upload Size changed from the default of 50 MB to 250 MB. In the TechNet article, Plan for caching and performance in SharePoint Server 2013, it states the following:

Maximum upload file size

This section describes the upload file size limitation, tells how to decide what the maximum upload file size limit should be, and how to configure it.

Maximum upload file size overview

The maximum upload file size is a setting that is used by the SharePoint Server 2013 web application that specifies the maximum size of a file that a user can upload to the server. When a new web application is created, SharePoint Server 2013 sets the default maximum upload size to 50 MB. If a user tries to upload a file larger than the specified maximum upload size, the upload will fail.

I went to my test 2013 farm (build 15.0.4569.1000) and, sure enough, the Maximum Upload Size is 250 MB.

NOTE: To check the settings, go to Central Admin -> Application Management -> Manage Web Applications. Click to the right of the web application then choose General Settings -> General Settings.

Apparently this change took place with the August 2013 CU for SharePoint 2013. Therefore, if you don’t want users to be able to automatically upload files this large, you will need to manually change this to a value within your business needs.

I have also contacted the TechNet team to have the article updated.
