Managing SQL Server 2008
There are loads of add-ins and management stuff from Microsoft and other vendors to make taking care of SQL Server easier, and in case you haven’t noticed SQL Server 2008 has now been released so will those tools work with the new version?
For the most part the answer is yes as SQL Server 2008 is more of the same stuff that was in SQL Server 2005, but there are new features as well. So the various tools will have to change to reflect the new features so you can get the benefit of upgrading.
In the Microsoft world some of these add-ins and feature packs are already available to make our management tools SQL Server 2008 aware:
- System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 Feature Pack (x86). This Update bundles the following features: Windows Server 2008 support, SQL Server 2008 support, enhanced support for sharing tape libraries and better tape utilization.
- System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 Feature Pack (x64). This Update bundles the following features: Windows Server 2008 support, SQL Server 2008 support, enhanced support for sharing tape libraries and better tape utilization.
- Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR July CTP. Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR implements support for SQL Server 2008.
- SQL Server Management Pack for MOM 2005. The SQL Server Management Pack monitors SQL Server services and features and their availability.
Similarly the main tools vendors Idera, Quest and Red-Gate all have extensive support for SQL Server 2008 already.
