Virtual Domain Controllers

This week the Running Domain Controllers in Hyper-V was republished with a new friendly URL (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/virtual_active_directory_domain_controller_virtualization_hyperv(WS.10).aspx). The goal was to help enhance discoverability of this topic through searches like virtual domain controller; Active Directory on Hyper-V; virtual Active Directory; Active Directory virtualization. Some people have asked the question: Does Microsoft even support running domain controllers or Active Directory on virtual servers? The answer is absolutely. You can run domain controllers on Hyper-V or other 3rd-party virtualization products. Microsoft doesn't support the non-Microsoft software, but the scenario is absolutely supported. Although the Running Domain Controllers in Hyper-V article is written specifically about using Hyper-V, many of the suggestions and cautions in the document apply to domain controllers running in any virtual environment.
